Shira Route – Scenic but Less Common Trail:
The Shira Route is one of the older and less frequently used trails on Mount Kilimanjaro. It shares many similarities with the Lemosho Route but begins at a much higher altitude on the Shira Plateau, which can make it more challenging for acclimatization early on.
The trail offers stunning panoramic views across the plateau, with vast open landscapes and fewer crowds compared to the more popular routes. Climbers eventually merge with the Machame Route at Shira Camp, continuing along the southern circuit of the mountain before summiting and descending via the Mweka Trail.
Because the starting point is already at high elevation, the Shira Route is best suited for experienced trekkers who are confident in their ability to acclimatize quickly. For those prepared, it provides a unique and beautiful alternative with excellent scenery and a quieter trekking experience.
